Copper Clad Steel Wire
Copper Clad Steel Wire is a bi-metal conductor that combines the strength of steel with the conductivity of copper. Copper cladding is bonded to a low carbon steel core and can be produced with different levels of conductivity to meet the needs of various applications. Copper-clad steel conductors are often used as the inner conductor in coaxial cables and as grounding wire. They have the strength of steel and can resist electrical damage caused by fault conditions. This type of wire also has the benefit of not being as prone to theft as traditional copper wiring.
Copper clad steel (CCS) consists of a core made of low, medium, or high-carbon steel which is thoroughly and consistently coated with copper on each side. The copper cladding is deposited by a cold rolling process to ensure uniform coverage with no flaking or cracking. This is an important step in producing high-quality copper-clad steel conductors that are used in telecommunications and electric-electronic applications.
This copper cladding is deposited over a low-carbon steel core that has been chemically treated and coated with an oxide layer to prevent corrosion. The resulting metal blend is then drawn to a specified diameter using a series of drawing passes. It is then annealed in order to relieve stress and make it easier for the wire to be formed into the desired shape.
During the drawing process, a special die is used to control the strands of copper cladding as they are pulled through the core. This ensures that the strands remain closely spaced and do not overlap, which could create an uneven surface and reduce conductivity. It is also important that the strands of cladding are properly aligned with the core to ensure proper distribution and consistency of conductivity.
CCS conductors are available as dead soft annealed or hard drawn and can be bare or insulated. They can be solid or stranded and meet all scope and general requirements of ASTM B 910. They are ideal for buried and overhead grounding wires as they have the high tensile strength of steel, but have the conductivity of copper. This makes them much less prone to damage from vibration during installation and is more resistant to electrical damage in the event of a fault condition.
