What is TCCA Wire?
A TCCA Wire is an electrical conductor which contains copper and aluminum. It is often used for power and control cables, particularly in aircraft. The conductors are insulated in flame retardant Cross-linked Polyethylene (XLPE) which is resistant to moisture, heat, and mechanical impact. This is a key requirement for aviation cables as they must be able to withstand the high temperatures generated by the electrical current in flight. XLPE is also a good choice for grounding wires as it is conductive and offers resistance to corrosion.
TCCA is used in electrical cables due to its lower cost. It has similar properties to copper but is far more durable. However, it has a higher DC resistance than copper which can lead to overheating in certain applications. Additionally, it is prone to fatigue at the point of termination which can cause random faults. In alarm systems, this can lead to false alarms, and in coaxes, it can degrade image quality.
These problems can be difficult to spot unless you know what to look out for. The easiest way to tell if you have a problem is to use an electrical resistance meter to measure the conductor. If the result is very high, it means that there is a significant amount of aluminum in the conductor. This is not only bad for the performance of the cable, but it can also be a fire hazard.
It is worth noting that some manufacturers produce a version of CCA which is called CCS, although it should be avoided at all costs. The CCS version uses recycled copper alloys which are made from a mixture of brass and tin. These are then clad in copper foil and reduced. The result is a conductor with much higher DC resistance than copper and which will eventually break down under stress. It is also more brittle than copper which could lead to wire failure in installation or splicing.
In addition to the above, a TCCA is harder to solder than copper and may not be suitable for tin welding applications. It is also not suitable for AC currents or frequencies above 60 Hz, as the skin effect causes most of the current to flow near the surface of the conductor.
