Copper Clad Aluminum Wire is a wire that has a solid copper core wrapped with an aluminum sheath. It is the type of electrical wire that is commonly installed in homes that were built between 1972 and 1975. In some cases, it may still be found in older homes where the electrical wiring was added or changed after that time period. It is also possible that it could appear in a new home built after 1975 if an electrician used it instead of solid copper wire for some reason.
Copper-clad aluminum conductors are a popular choice for a number of reasons. They offer a combination of economics resulting from the use of inexpensive aluminum with the good electric properties of copper. In addition, they are usually lighter than solid copper wire.
In order to make a copper-clad aluminum wire, the copper sheath is formed by winding a thin strip of pure copper around the outside of an aluminum core. The resulting composite wire is then drawn through a series of drawing dies to reduce the diameter of the sheath and ensure that the copper and aluminum are properly bonded together. In this process, it is important to maintain a controlled atmosphere and temperature, as it is critical that no air pockets develop between the core and sheath.
After the copper sheath has been properly bonded to the aluminum core, the entire conductor is passed through a series of finishing machines. This includes a wire drawing machine and a tin finisher, both of which are intended to give the conductor a smooth, corrosion-resistant surface. Once these machines have been completed, the conductor is ready to be sold to a customer.
As with any other type of wire, it is important that the end of the copper-clad aluminum conductor is properly terminated and insulated. This will help to prevent any potential safety hazards that could result from a loose or unprotected termination, such as exposing bare metal that might lead to electrocution. A good way to terminate the copper-clad aluminum wire is to use a lug, which is a device that attaches to a terminal block or an electrical panel. A lug is typically made of brass or bronze, and can be secured to the conductor using a screw.
It is also important that the end of the copper-clad aluminium wire be filed to expose the silver-colored aluminium core. This is not something that you would normally do as a home inspector, as it requires turning off the electrical power to the circuit and potentially filing off the entire copper sheath at the end of the wire in a way that could possibly cause an electrical short.
If you are unsure whether the copper-clad aluminum wire in your home is safe to leave in place, you should have it tested by a licensed electrician. The ampacity (current-carrying capacity) of copper-clad aluminum wire is the same as that of solid copper wire, so it can be safely used with devices and connectors that are recognized for use with both types of copper conductors. However, it is important to note that 12-10 AWG copper-clad aluminum wire cannot be intermixed with solid copper conductors in terminals for splicing connections unless the connectors are specifically recognized for such use.
